HOW IT WORKS
The Academy of Sustainability allows students to choose a career theme like agriculture, early childhood education, and more. They still learn math, English, science and social studies, but it is taught through the theme of their chosen career interest. We will connect students to real-world, hand-on learning in a field that interests them.
Freshman year, all students are enrolled in FRESHMAN ACADEMY where they explore the different pathways available in the Academy. Then, students choose which Pathway they would like to pursue for their 10th - 12th grade years. Choosing a career theme, or PATHWAY, is like choosing a college major. The Pathway becomes a school within a school where students study with those with similar interests and build strong relationships with teachers and each other. Our career themed pathways are centered around real opportunities for high-demand, high-wage careers in our region. We believe it’s possible for our students to find a rewarding career that allows them to make a living in Mississippi, they just need to follow the career path right for them.
No matter what career themed pathway a student chooses, courses relate to real problems being faced by real companies, and students learn about them both in and out of the classroom. Workplace learning opportunities such as job shadowing and internships give students hands-on experiences, understanding of career options, and increased technical and soft skills.
